Week-by-week

Step-by-step - the early weeks

Week 1- 3 During week 3, the fertilised egg moves along the fallopian tube towards your womb.

Weeks 4 - 6 During weeks 4 - 5, the tiny embryo settles into the lining of your womb. Now your baby's heart has begun to form and by week 6, it has begun to beat.

Weeks 7 - 9 You baby's face is forming and hands and feet are beginning to take shape.

Weeks 10 - 12 Your baby measures just 17mm from head to bottom.
Now all your baby's organs have formed.

Step-by-step - from week 13 to delivery

Weeks 13 - 16 Your baby is beginning to move. At first the movement might feel like a 'fluttering' inside.

Weeks 17 - 20 If you were to have an ultra-sound scan or a photograph you could see your baby's face clearly. You might even see your baby stick out his or her tongue.

Weeks 21 - 23 Your baby now measures 16cm from head to bottom. Your baby will soon begin to respond to sound. A loud noise may take your baby jump or kick.

Weeks 24 - 26 At around 26 weeks, your baby's eyes open for the first time.

Weeks 27 - 29 Your baby now measures about 24cm from head to bottom.

Weeks 30 - 32 By about 32 weeks, your baby will move to lie head downwards.

Weeks 33 - 36 Your baby's head may move down into your pelvis. It is said to be 'engaged'. (Sometimes it does not engage until labour begins). If you have heartburn, it may start to feel better now.

Weeks 37 - 39 Your baby is now at full size.
