The combined clinic

In most areas there are clinics where antenatal and diabetes care are combined.
Ask your GP or Diabets Specialist Nurse to refer you.

What happens at a combined clinic?

During your visits to the combined clinic you and your unborn baby can expect extra special care, including:

  • A review of all your medication to make sure it is suitable for pregnancy
  • Your insulin regimen will be reviewed and may be changed - for example, more frequent injections may help you to achieve better blood glucose control
  • You will be given folic acid supplements, which you should take for the first twelve weeks of your pregnancy, to protect your baby's development
  • You will have regular examinations to check your:
    • Eyes
    • Kidneys
    • Heart
    • Blood pressure
  • Regular ultra-sound examinations to check your baby's growth
  • Plus lots of help to achieve tight control of your blood glucose levels
