Coping with morning sickness

Like many mums to be you may suffer from morning sickness in the early stages of pregnancy. Here are a few facts about morning sickness:

  • Morning sickness doesn't just happen in the morning
  • It can happen at any time of day, but in the early stages, pregnant women, often feel nauseous when they first wake up
  • Speak to your Midwife who may have some useful tips, for example some women recommend eating a dry biscuit before moving at all, even before sitting up in bed
  • The good news is that morning sickness usually stops after your 16th week of pregnancy

Your insulin regimen

To help you cope with morning sickness you may be able to make some adjustments to your insulin regimen. But before you do, you MUST consult your Diabetes Specialist Nurse or Diabetes Specialist Midwife.

Depending upong the type of insulin you are using, he or she will be able to make some recommendations which may help, for example:

  • If you are short acting insulin to coincide with your meals, you could delay your morning injection until you are ready to eat
  • If you are using a premixed short and longer acting insulin you may be able to change to a different regimen which will be easier to adjust

Very occasionally, if your morning sickness is really severe, you may have to come into hospital until is it no longer a problem.
