Looking after your feet

Check your feet yourself

You should check your feet everyday, looking out for blisters, cuts or scratches. If you cannot easily see the underneath of your feet, then using a mirror in good light can make this easier. If your eyesight isn't good enough, then you should ask a friend or relative for some help.

Get your feet checked by a professional

A chiropodist can inspect your feet. Your feet should also be examined at your regular diabetes check up.

Always ask for professional help for corns or verrucas

For people with diabetes, corns and verrucas should always be treated by a chiropodist. Your GP can recommend one local to you.

Never try to treat them yourself - the liquids, ointments, paints and plasters that you can buy may not be suitable for diabetics as they contain acids, which can cause further damage to your feet.
