Monitor diary information

Keeping your weight under control is always important. When you have diabetes it is even more so, because being overweight can lead to all sorts of problems.

Nowadays doctors don't talk in terms of ideal weights of target weight, but rather of Body Mass Index (BMI), which relates your weight to your height and allows for individual varation in build etc. by grouping the results into 5 broad categories.

Calculate your BMI

To find out what your BMI is, enter your weight (in stones and pounds) and your height (in feet and inches) in the boxes below and click "Calculate your BMI".

If your BMI is:

less than 18.4

You are: underweight for your height

18.5 - 24.9

You are: ideal weight

25.0 - 29.9

You are: over your ideal weight for your height

30.0 - 39.9

You are: obese

over 40.0

You are: very obese

If you have a BMI of over 25, you need to think about losing weight because you have an increased risk of developing serious health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and several forms of cancer.

If your BMI indicates that you should lose weight, DO NOT just go on a diet by yourself. This could cause far more problems than it solves. ALWAYS talk to your Dieticians, Doctor or Diabetes Nurse before trying any weight reduction program.
